She spat it out at his face, the way one would spit out the first morning saliva with so much disgust. Her acid fell on his face and gradually slipped down his whole body before fading away on the wings of time, just like he did once. He felt the years that had passed by in her heavy tongue, but he did not respond.

“What of the people you left behind?” She asked.

“Good.”

She didn’t look surprised. She stepped forward in a bid to help him with his luggage – but he drew back – he held onto his bag as though it was a third arm. She turned around and walked out on him… but he followed closely.

Uzoma felt his domineering presence from behind and felt disgusted for no good reason. She despised his shadow and everything that hovered with it. Her father, now gray, settled at the back of her Toyota Rav4 while she drove straight to pick up the kids from school. He stared at him through the review mirror as he reciprocated her gaze. They didn’t talk throughout the journey until Uzoma stopped in front of the kid’s school. She killed the engine and said,

“I need to pick up my kids.”

She saw him nod through the review mirror. She watched closely and despised his sudden arrival even more. She opened the door and left for the kids, wondering where she had dug up all the hate that she thought were buried in sands of time.

She met her first daughter on her way; she was already in exam class. As soon as the young lady saw her mother, she gave her a sunshine smile, followed by a hug.

“Is grandpa here already?”

Uzoma refused to answer. She threw a question back at her,

“Where are the others?”

“They would soon be out.”

Nkiru read the meaning behind her mother’s stern expression towards her father and changed her mind from asking further questions. Soon, Kamsi and Kosi joined them at the waiting hall and they all left together. Before she was able to catch up with them, they had already ran to the car. Breathing with excitement, they jumped all over their grandfather. He smiled; this was the first time she ever saw streaks of sunlight burst all over his face. She was sure she saw what looked like salt water trickle down by the corners of his eyes. He hugged them over and over, like the man she saw at the airport hugging his kids. She started the engine and they all headed home.

At home, the kids went about their usual chores while she showed him to his room. They have not spoken any good word apart from the ones she threw on him like acid at the airport and at her kid’s school. She showed him the toilet, bathroom and the kitchen.

As she gave him a tour of her house, he stared at her as though he wanted to say something; but he didn’t know how to go about it. She cared less for his utterances; she wished that he leaves the following day as soon as possible. The sight of him had caused a lot of damage to her heart.

After showing him around, she turned to leave; but to her utmost surprised, he said, “Dalu.”

Uzoma was almost thrown off balance; her dad has never spoken Igbo to them, not even a trailer driver. “Sometime must be wrong,” She guessed.

She was more surprised to hear his voice for the first time, but she walked out on him to get dinner ready. While in the kitchen, she heard her kids cackle and rattle, but her mind went to the event of meeting her childhood sweetheart earlier in the day. She remembered how his house served as a shield from her dad’s fury at most times. Nwanne was always willing to share his food, clothes and bed with her, each time the whirl wind came upon her family. His father’s rejection and abandonment, coupled with her mother’s negligence drew her closer to Nwanne and farther apart from her family. He was the one she confided in when she was most vulnerable.

She could not remember a moment of sanity each time her father was around. She came into this world only to meet her father beat her mother to submission. It was a culture at home. When she got married newly, she flinched at each show of affection by her husband, thinking he wanted to take a swing at her each time he came close to hugging her.

As she picked the last part of the Onugbo leaf for the soup, she heard a click and a soft bang at the door. It was her husband. Her face softened up a bit from the earlier hours. She felt his warm arms grab gently at her from behind. He nestled closer and left a soft warm kiss on her neck.

“Where is my in-law?”

The question tightened a muscle in her body and he felt it. He smiled and gently massaged her shoulders while she washed up. He came at her in a softer way,

“Where is your father?”

She replied in the most roguish way;

“In his room.”

“How was your day?” He said while massaging her shoulder to keep her relaxed.

“Fine. Yours?”

“Great. Let me go and see him.”
