“Hi... I’m Annabel,” said, a young girl who was within my age range. She welcomed me to the fold. It seemed she was the only one nice to me. The others had that jealous look on their faces, judging from the fact that I was given special treatment from the boss: he allowed me sleep in the girls room and bought me new clothes. He even invited me to live with him and his family; but I wasn’t ready to be victimized again. I couldn’t tell if his intentions were pure or not.
"Hi.. I’m Bukky." I replied, complimenting my response with a kind smile.
“Wow! Your eyes are very pretty,” She gasped and commented in admiration.
"Would you two get back to work!"
Madam Lizzy yelled on top of her voice. She was our immediate supervisor. It had been rumoured that she was our boss’ girlfriend, except that the manager had been paying little attention to her ever since I arrived. But that’s none of my business.
She was beginning to get on my nerves. “Annabel, go on your knees,” She ordered.
What! How ridiculous.
“Get me a cane.”
She gave Annabel the lashing of her life. I tried to bear the screams, but this was way too much for me. I bounced on her before I even realised it.
“Madam! Please stop this.”
I met her red eyes, “Are you mad?!” She raged as though we had a dispute to settle.
“Madam, with all due respect… I believe it’s unethical to assault an employee of an organization.”
She stopped and faced me, “You dare challenge me?”
She raised her hand to slap me.
“Don't you dare!” I warned. She noticed the stern look on my face. One thing my father had always taught me was never to be intimidated when I’m right.
“Annabel let's go.”
I picked her up from the floor and took her back to the counter.
Later that night I was summoned to the manager's office where my issue had been tabled, but it all ended in my favor when some of the staffs who were present at the scene spoke out for me. The marks of abuse was still visible on Annabel's body. Madam Lizzy was suspended for a week.
Seven days later, she resumed work. She took onto a new habit of remaining calm and composed; I was glad about that, but little did I know that she had planned something evil that will add more salt to my open wounds.
