Two weeks later, we all stood in front of the altar to witness the couples (Paul and Lizzy) exchanged vows. They finally said “I do”. I was the chief bridesmaid while my Daniel was the best man.

“I think both of you should just tie the knot today once and for all,” Paul said and his wife supported the motion. We all laughed it off.

“Don’t worry, just give us little time,” Daniel replied him.

“Little time!? Is he planning to propose?” I asked myself.

After the reception, we saw them off to the airport. They traveled to Paris for their honeymoon. I really miss Lizzy so much. She called everyday despite the fact that she was on her honeymoon.

My love for Daniel increased on a daily basis. The same applies to him. I frequent his office more than often. I dropped most of my extra lesson classes just to be with him. His secretary (Lola) and I became friends along the way, although she’s younger than me.

Daniel turned on a new habit called ‘gifts shower’. He showered me with all kinds of gifts; some I even had to dash out. I lacked nothing, I was just working for the sake of it, not necessarily for money. It got to a point I had to complain.

“You are spoiling me with too much gifts,” I said.

“Let me spoil you... you are all that I have here. You are my only family – my sister, my friend, my companion and everything. If I don’t spoil you, who should I spoil?” he said teasingly with a kiss.

On one unexpected day, Daniel proposed to me after we had a dinner date in an exotic restaurant. It was so romantic.

“Will you marry this man that is head over heels in love with you?” he said, kneeling on one knee with a red velvet box in his hand.

“Yes, I will!” I said with teary eyes. I was so happy.

“I promise to love and cherish you for the rest of my life,” he said and kissed me.

He took me home that night when we left the restaurant. He pulled over and held my hand before I alighted. When I got home, I told my family about my engagement. They were all happy to hear the news. I went straight to my room afterwards.

I looked at the expensive diamond ring on my finger; I definitely know it will cost a fortune. I remember where I was coming from, I couldn’t help but cry. I tried to hold back the tears but I couldn’t, I just let it flow. Here I am with a man who loved and cherished me so much.

“Lord, I owe it all to You,” I said aloud.

I found peace and fulfillment within me. I’m trusting God to give me all it takes to be a virtuous woman.

An hour later, he called me when he got home. He thanked me for accepting his proposal and he made so many promises. Please who will turn down a marriage proposal from a man like Daniel?

Sooner than I’d expected, the young couples returned from their honeymoon trip. They came to my house to pay me a visit. It was so good to see them again. Lizzy was sparkling in her yellow gown. Her Brazilian hair, makeup and everything was on point. She looked more beautiful than ever.

“Lizzy, look at you… Who says marriage is not a beautiful thing?”

She turned around and accessed herself.

“Thank you!” she said smiling.

“You look stunning. Paul, I can see your handwork here,” I added.

“Yea! I tried right?”

“This is more than try, job well done,” I said and gave him a high five.

They also congratulated me on my engagement.

“Girlfriend, I think you’ll need a bodyguard to carry that thing around,” Lizzy said jokingly.

“You can say that again.”

“It’s so beautiful,” she said in admiration of my engagement ring.

“Thank you…” I said blushing.

I asked Lizzy when she’ll resume work and he said the next day.

“This is why I don’t like banking jobs o. Do you people rest at all?”

“Imagine the bank gave her just two weeks for honeymoon. I had to pull strings to get an extra week,” Paul explained.

“I’m not complaining, I love my job,” she said, giving us a funny attitude.

“You hear that she’s not complaining!?“ I said and we laughed it out.

They left an hour later and promised to check on Daniel the next day.

During the week, I decided to pay my fiancé a surprise visit at the office. I got there and spent few minutes chatting with Lola. She noticed the diamond ring on my finger and congratulated me. I went into his office afterward.

“What a pleasant surprise! You didn’t tell me you were coming,” he said with his gaze fixed on his laptop.

“Dee, I’m sorry for barging in on you unannounced.”

“Where is that my secretary?”

He rang her on the intercom.

“Yes sir, you called me,” she said and walked in.

“It’s like you’ve gotten another job right?”

“Sir! Did I do something wrong?” Lola said with pleading eyes.

“So you now bend rules for her right?” He asked her. “I’m even sure you are aware she’ll be coming but you didn’t dim it fit to tell me.”

“I’m sorry, sir. I… thought…”

Daniel and I began to laugh at her.

“So you didn’t know he was joking all along?” I pointed at her, still laughing.

“You need to see your face,” he said to Lola.

She joined us to laugh.

“You scared me boss!”

“I thought you don’t fear me, now I know you do. You can go back to your sit.”

“Boss you know I do, but for every rule there’s an exception,” she said smiling.

“And she’s the exception?” he asked, giving me a funny face.

Lola nodded and left the office smiling.

“I love surprises,” he said, walking up to join me on the sofa.

He gave me a kiss on my lips and sat beside me.

“You are not nice at all; she almost fainted, you know.”

“I was just pulling her legs. What can I offer you?”

“Nothing. Some cold water would do and I can help myself with that.”

I stood up and walked to the small fridge in his office. I opened it and picked a bottle water. I went back to my sit and said, “I brought you something.”

“What did you bring for me?” he asked excitedly.

“I baked last night,” I said and brought out the cup cakes I made for him.

“You are such a darling” he said and planted another kiss on my lips.

He settled down and ate the cake. I served him a glass of juice. He fed me with some of the cake. After the light refreshments, he went back to his sit and continued working.

I noticed he was very busy so I left an hour later. He was very grateful for the treat.

I got a call from Tunde later in the day. I was already fuming before I answered his call. “This time, I’ll make sure he gets arrested,” I said to myself.

Pamilerin, I need you. Please come, there’s no one I could call right now,” he pleaded.

"Tunde, please don't start, I don't have time for your games."

"Pamilerin, I have no one else... I have nobody. Please...” he said crying.

"Tunde, crying? This got to be serious!” I thought to myself.

“Where are you now?”

"My house… I mean the house the company gave me. I have less than 24 hours to evacuate this place,” he said sobbing.

“I’m on my way,” I said.

I called Daniel to inform him.

"You want to go there alone? What if this is a set up?" he asked.

“I don’t think so.”

"Are you not scared at all? Do you have a death wish or something? This guy could harm you!”

"I can’t just turn a deaf hear on him. He has no relative in Lagos and I’m sure his friends have deserted him now that he has no money." I explained.

"Give me his address, I’ll meet you there. In case you get there before me, don’t go in, stay outside.”

“He can’t hurt me, but I’ll do as you say.”

“Daniella, I mean it. Wait for me before you embark on your rescue mission,” he said firmly.

“Yes sir! I'll wait for you outside.”
