Once again, news spread like wildfire fire. It was discovered that the line had been loose from its hook. Who could have done that? Simon had some suspects in mind. He held Eve in his arms for some minutes and waited for the shock to creep into his system.
“She is strong, she can't be hurt,” that's how he had always seen her.
Contrary to his thoughts, she laid lifeless, with blood dripping from the side of her forehead.
"Get the first aid kit! You call the ambulance!"
People gave way at the sound of the siren. Simon joined her in the ambulance and held her hands so tight. His heart was beating so fast.
Upon reaching the hospital, Eve was placed on oxygen and wheeled into the Emergency ward. Simon was prevented from entering the ward.
Yvonne rushed to the hospital when she heard the news.
"Where is she?" she asked.
Simon didn't say a word. Yvonne paced to and fro, stopping every nurse who passed by to at least ease her fears.
Peter was not at ease, neither was Nkoli. The whole world pointed accusing fingers at them. They seemed to be the only enemies Eve had, so it was normal for them to be suspected.
The doctor allayed their fears when he mentioned that she had a fifty percent chance of surviving.
Simon began to rage with anger. If Eve doesn't make it alive, he would commit murder.
He realised that he still had feelings for her. He had always loved her. He shouldn't have kicked her out of the house that day. He should have listened to her. He should have protected her. This shouldn't have happened — he should have caught her before she fell.
This was big trouble for both Nkoli and Peter; they sincerely hoped she didn't make it.
"She should just die father," Peter said while watching the news.
He switched off the television and threw the remote away.
"If she wakes up, who knows what she would do?” He asked, “She would come back for us in full force. I hope she doesn't make it."
Nkoli paced around the room.
"Did you do it?" he asked.
"What are you talking about?” Peter asked. “I didn't... Did you?"
He scoffed at it. He didn't even know if he should even trust Nkoli anymore. They didn't trust each other on this one.
"If none of us did this, who did? Who tried to kill her? Does she have more enemies?"
Simon opened the door slowly.
"My friend, what are you doing here? would you...”
The manner in which he approached Nkoli made him shut his mouth without him asking.
"I think it's time you listen to me,” Peter said, “I’m aware of the atrocities you committed in the past — I know you killed my parents!"
The shock on their faces was so visible. Peter began to stammer.
"Son?"
"Don't call me that!"
His eyes turned red. Anger seethed through his veins. He grabbed Peter by the neck and held him against the wall.
"Peter, if anything happens to Eve, I would hunt you to hell. I would pull your flesh from your soul. I would make sure you beg for death..."
